MARINE, MILITARY MODELMAKER AND ARTIST
Cees van der Burght

Cees van der Burght is an ex-Marine and Military man from Holland, who grew up during WWII. After the war, Cees joined The Marines in '51, and furthered his Military career as a Military Illustrator and drawer. Over the decades, Cees has reproduced war-scenes and related, most of which reflect his memories as a kid during the war which have been materialized and come to life captured in various materials, including solid wood, paper mache, canvas, oil and ink. His work holds hundreds of one-off items, including exact, 1:5 scale paper mache and wooden models, paintings, drawings, and maquettes. The 1:5 models are detailed to perfection, and weaponry is reproduced in exact scale using wood, metal and leather. A lot of Cees' work depicts him as a kid, cast as a paper mache model or in his paintings and drawings, set in his hometown Flushing (Vlissingen), Holland '41 – '45. Cees' work also includes a lot of Military models and artwork from the war and siege in Flushing throughout history, dating back to the invasion of the Duke of Alva (1572) and Dutch Maritime warlord Admiral de Ruyter (1665) amongst others. Cees' work is unique and never before reproduced or researched and captured in such detail. It is exactly this and Cees' impressive knowledge of (Dutch) Military History that landed his work in Museums and local archives. Check out the truly amazing work of Cees, and any questions related to his material can be addressed to:

ROY BOEHM – First Seal (book review)

Book specifications:
editors: Roy Boehm and Charles W. Sasser

publisher: Pocket books * 1st press: 1997 * hardcover ISBN #: 0-671-53625-7 * written in English * book jacket design and illustration by James Wang
book review written by Paul v.d.B.

“First Seal” is a high octane read that documents the active duty-service and adventures of a young Navy recruit with a dream and a destiny; the formation of Undersea Commando Warriors. Some twenty years onwards, this long haunting vision became reality, as he morphed into commander of the toughest, bad-ass fighting unit in the world; the U.S. Navy Seals. The path from how he first envisioned Unconventional Warfare by Undersea Commandos, to the actual formation of this elite fighting force, has been one with many obstacles and conflicts along the way, both over the desk of the 'bean-counters', and on the battefield; Roy's playground. “First Seal” is a smokin' barrels, real-events adventure that finds him engaged in many intense battles and missions, being bombed at sea, shot down in an aeroplane, fighting sharks and enemy attacks, and miraculously escaping death on more than one occasion. Roy's career had been battle-scarred from start to finish, and takes you right back to Roy's enlistment in the Navy and his early days as a hard-hat diver at age 17, salvaging bodies and goods from sunken Naval vessels after the Pearl Harbor attack. Here, the story of Roy Boehm starts; a rough-and-ready Sailor with a 'Bulldog Mouth' and a natural born fighting spirit that landed him several courts-martial; A man, hard as nails, with an unconditional loyalty and devotion to his men, mission and country, and modelled by the 'Rocks and Shoals' of the old navy; A man who fought in the South Pacific under heavy enemy fire, infiltrated deep into Cuban Missile installations at the heat of the Cuba Crisis, and lead numerous mission in Vietnam. This book takes you to battle as if you were part of it with the reality of war written in gruelling detail; from roaring rockets, rattling machine guns, explosions, and illuminating flares to smoking shot wounds, flying bullets and bobbing bodies. “First Seal” is a nose-dive thrill ride into the action-packed world of maverick mustang Lieutenant Roy Boehm; a real 'man-of wars-man'.

48 Painfbat, Regiment Van Heutsz
Tales and traditions from a distinguished Battalion

The Van Heutsz Regiment is a Dutch Infantry Regiment with a rich history and a strong tradition that has been carried forward ever since its inception in 1950. The renowned 48 Painfbat (Armoured Infantry Battalion) got fully operational in 1968 and was stationed in Den Bosch, where it also housed the Van Heutsz museum and hosted many ceremonies of the Regiment. In 1994, the Battalion was suspended but the spirit is kept alive by those who have served, and through various websites that commemorate this notable battalion with its iconic YP408 Armoured Personnel Vehicles, 'trademark' orange and black uniform emblems, and Indian chief logo. For further information and or pics of either the Regiment Van Heutsz or the 48 Painfbat, check out the following websites; www.ouwestomp.nl (48Painfbat) www.benteng.nl (Regiment Van Heutsz) www.dafyp408.nl (the Daf YP408 Armoured Personnel vehicle and the soldiers that served on it, including 48 Painfbat)

HMS BELFAST – experience life on board a historic Royal Navy Cruiser

The HMS BELFAST is a historic Royal Navy Cruiser that has been operational before, during and after WW II, up until the early 60's when it was taken out of service. In the years that followed, the IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM preserved the HMS BELFAST and brought it back to its former glory as it took its home in London Bridge where she is moored as a Naval Museum ship. A tour on the ship gives you nine decks to explore; all the way from the vessel's highest point; the Gun Direction Platform, all the way down below the waterline to the Mechanical heart of the ship where a network of steep ladders take you to this most impressive labyrinth of pipes and valves that form the Boiler Room and the Engine Room. Climbing your way up one level displays the tremendous fire-power of this heavily armed Battle Cruiser, where rounds of 6-inch Turret shells lay ready for big-gun action. The next deck gives you an impression of the life on board the vessel; from the Provision-Issue Room (daily Rum Ration supply), Mailroom, Bakery, and Galley to the confined Messdecks, lined with manned hammocks over seating areas and in between lockers. It is also on this deck that one has incorporated a 'mini-museum within a museum' through the “Life At Sea” exhibition galleries. The upper decks is where the Military operations took place and enemy detection and radar-simulation are re-enacted with sound and vision in the Electronic Warfare Office. Have a peek from behind one of the double 4-inch HA/LA Guns, or look over the river Thames from the Admiral's bridge. After your 'museum-tour-of duty', you can rest your sea-legs at the Cafe-bar or pick up some Military and Maritime memorabilia in the gift shop.

The HMS BELFAST is located right off London-Bridge, and is open to the public seven days a week, from 10AM – 6PM (Summer) and from 10AM – 5PM (Winter). The museum is closed on 24, 25 and 26 December.
More information about the HMS BELFAST, directions and ticket-price, can be found on the Imperial War Museum website at: www.iwm.org.uk

COMBATFIGURES.COM – Where G.I. Joes come to life and kick ass...
web: www.combatfigures.com
COMBATFIGURES.COM is a website from Combat Figure enthusiast, former Wrestler and Rock Musician Ron Galletti who got his first G.I. Joe when he was 7 years of age. With his action figures he would re-create battle scenes in the backyard full of non-stop action and adventure until the sun went down. Decades later, Ron would do the same but from the perspective of an adult with the knowledge of battle-scenes and how to re-enact these through his much cherished G.I Joe's. As Ronnie says; “I feel collecting is great but if you never take your toys out of the box and play with them, you will never have these childhood memories”, “Childhood memories you don't want to forget or let go”. With his action figures, Ron has re-created battles of the past through frame-to-frame photo shoots that in sequence make a storyboard adventure with titles such as: Air Cavalry Resccue, Pinned Dow Mike Force Resque, PBR navy Seal Mission, Sgt. Rock and others. Some of these shoots have been narrated in a montage and uploaded as a video which can be viewed on the Combat Figures Youtube Channel. Ron has documented battle scenes from both WWII and Vietnam, but also the U.S. Civil War. The Wesbite further has a gallery with (vintage) boxed G.I. Joes and other models, plus on-line magazine with lots of pictures from G.I.Joe conventions, showing the models and their owners. A great site for any serious G.I. Joe fan or collector.

ROAD DEVILS – Kustom Cars, Trucks and Hell raisin'.....
web: www.roaddevils.com
The ROAD DEVILS is an U.S. based, pre '65 American Kustom Car and Truck club that was formed in '46 by soldiers that returned from WW II. Now, decades onwards, the ROAD DEVILS still keep the 'old style of the true poor boy rodding' alive, with Chapters across the U.S.A and around the globe, and growing in numbers. The ROAD DEVILS capture the true spirit of Roddin', and is for those that know about the sweat, grease, tools and hours on end in the shed to build their Kustom Rod, RatRod, Sled or Cruiser.
In 2009, the Road Devils added the Devil's Brigade chapter to their club; a Military-only chapter who derived their name from the famed WW II Commando Unit, and has members coming from present Elite Fighting Forces such as the Rangers, USMC, and U.S. Army Special Forces. About half of its members are presently deployed, and whilst they are gone, their fellow Club members help out, looking after their Hot Rods and families.
